Love and hate in New Orleans
January 4th, 2009 10:50 PM

I've been to New Orleans about 20 times in my life. My parents started taking me when I was 4, which according to some pastors I've had in my life, constitutes child abuse.

Only once have I ever seen trouble in New Orleans, and it didn't come from locals, but from a collection of kids in town for what appeared to be some kind of punk rock convention a couple of decades ago.

The trip to New Orleans to watch Alabama play Utah in the Sugar Bowl was my first post-Katrina trip... [Read More]

Utah wrap-up: A breakdown of Bama’s breakdown

Thanks largely to a laptop computer that died in New Orleans at the worst possible time – as in, when it was powered up just a few minutes after the clock hit 0:00 – there was no immediate game recap story posted Friday night. Unlike Alabama, we’ll take advantage of an opportunity to make a positive out of a negative.

It’s been awhile since this space was used to do a... [Read More]

Sugar Bowl preview: Alabama can’t overlook dangerous Utah team

You’ve probably heard it all already: Utah, a Mountain West team, can’t compete with SEC juggernaut Alabama. Utah is just “Florida Lite.” The Utes will be exposed as soon as the ball is kicked off.

Someone call Oklahoma and get their thoughts on Boise State.

The reality is that Utah is a very, very good football team. The Utes are something... [Read More]

Quick bowl takes from ‘The Upper Deck’
December 31st, 2008 03:19 AM

Didn’t see an article on this site breaking down the bowl matchups like we do each week with games involving SEC teams? That’s because we didn’t write one.

Bowl week is a bowl of mixed nuts every year. dWhen teams have this much time off, and this much time for distraction – see Andre Smith, Alabama – it gets hard to know who’s going to show up and who isn’t.

The only game of the bunch that even feels like a normal game is Florida-Oklahoma, because the stakes... [Read More]

Recruiting: Alabama looks to bolster already strong DL

With a look at the offense finished, we now move to the defensive side of the ball, which has quickly been built into a strength by head coach Nick Saban.

The defensive line has overachieved for two years now, and many fans are hungrily looking at the 2009 season as the point at which the line steps up its game, particularly against the pass. Alabama is in the market for several ends and tackles. Here’s a breakdown:

Recruiting: Tight ends, offensive linemen make the difference in Tide offense
December 20th, 2008 02:08 AM

Last week, we profiled some of the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers that Alabama is targeting in recruiting in 2008-2009. But what really makes Alabama’s clock tick are the offensive linemen and tight ends, around which Alabama’s power offense of 2008 was designed.

Here’s a breakdown of those two positions, plus the fullback/H-back position:

---

Tight ends
Committed: None

I have had almost a full day to digest (or regurgitate) Alabama's 31-17 loss to Utah. I'm no different than any other Alabama fan, having been one my entire life. I was sick over the loss to the Utes, and disgusted that the Tide didn't play better. It was a lousy way to have a phenomenal season come to a close.
That being said, there's absolutely no way I'm

Big thanks to South Carolina for showing up this morning, huh?
Man, any concern we all had that Steve Spurrier would make the Gamecocks a legitimate contender in the SEC should now be put to rest. I am truly strting to believe there might be more upside to Kentucky and Vandy than there is in Columbia.
Sticking with the Palmetto State...It's great to see Dabo Sweeney get an opportunity at Clemson - and make the most of it. As I post this, his Tigers have just taken the lead over Nebraska. I don't know if

10 p.m. CST - I'm back.

Okay, I know that doesn't quite carry the same weight as when Michael Jordan released his statement several years ago. However, after a couple of weeks of illness, and a little time to myself and my family, I am indeed returning to my daily posts here on my website.
I really do appreciate the E-mails and text messages from those of you who have asked where I've been and made sure I was okay. I apologize for the lack of activity, and
